Large Loss Decoder

Decode and organize multiple serial numbers in one workflow. The Large Loss Decoder is built for adjusters, contents professionals, restoration teams, and anyone researching multiple items from the same loss, inventory, or property. Add each item as a row, then process the batch while keeping the age result, model information, and decode status together.

How It Works

  1. 1 Add one row for each item you need to research.
  2. 2 Enter category, brand, serial number, and model when available.
  3. 3 Select Decode All to process the batch, then review each item independently.

The Large Loss Decoder uses the same brand-specific serial-number decoding approach as the individual Serial Number Decoder, but organizes multiple items into one batch workflow. Each row is evaluated independently, so one unsupported or ambiguous serial does not make the rest of the list unusable.

Understanding Batch Results

Each row's Status column moves from Pending to Loading while the batch runs, then settles on either ✓ Decoded or ✗ Error. The Age/Year column shows the decoded result once available, and the Explain button opens a breakdown for that row — estimated age, year code, month or period, decoding method, and any notes on a successful row, or the specific reason a row could not be decoded.

If a serial number can represent more than one possible year, or the brand does not have a verified deterministic rule, Decode My Item should not invent a precise age. You'll see every candidate year the code matches rather than a single guessed date. Review the row individually, or use Smart Lookup for additional product research on items the decoder can't resolve.

Large Loss vs. One Item at a Time

Researching many items one at a time in the Serial Number Decoder works, but re-entering brand and category for every item adds up quickly on a large list. The Large Loss Decoder keeps every item's inputs and results in one table, so a full inventory can be built, decoded, and reviewed in a single pass instead of dozens of separate lookups.

Accuracy & Methodology

Results depend on the serial format supplied by the manufacturer. A deterministic decoded year is different from an estimated product age. Decode My Item does not force a year when the available serial data does not support one — see the full methodology for how decoder rules are researched, verified, and how ambiguous results are handled.
