Sales Tax De-Calculator

Already have a total that includes sales tax? Enter the total and the tax rate to find the pre-tax amount and the embedded tax — useful when a contractor or vendor quote bundles tax in but your workflow needs it broken out.

Enter the rate manually — this tool doesn't look up rates by location.

Enter the total and tax rate, then select Calculate Pre-Tax Amount to see your results here.
Pre-tax amount = tax-inclusive total ÷ (1 + tax rate). This is a manual, single-purpose calculation — it does not look up tax rates by location and does not provide legal or tax advice.

What is a sales tax de-calculator?

A sales tax de-calculator works backward from a total that already includes tax to find the original pre-tax price and the tax amount embedded inside it. It's the reverse of a normal sales tax calculator, which starts from a pre-tax price and adds tax on top.

Why remove sales tax from a quote?

Contractors and vendors sometimes give a single, round, tax-inclusive number for a job or item. If your workflow, spreadsheet, or estimating software needs the pre-tax price and tax handled as separate line items, you need to reverse the calculation rather than guess.

functions

Why not just subtract 7%?

Subtracting the tax-rate percentage directly from a tax-inclusive total does not correctly reverse the calculation, because that percentage was originally applied to the smaller pre-tax amount, not to the larger total.

Naive (incorrect) approach $2,500 − 7% of $2,500
$2,500 − $175.00 = $2,325.00

Wrong. This subtracts 7% of the total, but the total already has tax baked in, so this overcorrects.

Correct de-calculation $2,500 ÷ 1.07
$2,500 ÷ 1.07 = $2,336.45

Right. Dividing by (1 + tax rate) correctly reverses the original tax calculation, leaving $163.55 in embedded tax.

Insurance and replacement-cost context

In some replacement-cost and estimating workflows, sales tax is calculated as its own separate line item rather than folded into a single quoted price. If you're reviewing a contractor or vendor quote that already bundles tax into one number, this calculator can help you find the underlying pre-tax amount for that kind of workflow.

Not every insurer or estimating system handles tax the same way, and this page does not provide legal, tax, or claim-settlement advice. If you also need to establish an item's age for a related depreciation estimate, see the RCV / ACV Depreciation Calculator.

FAQ

Does this look up my local sales tax rate? expand_more

No. Rate entry is manual by design — enter whatever rate applies to your quote or receipt.

Can I use this to add tax to a price instead? expand_more

This tool is focused specifically on removing tax from an already tax-inclusive total. A standard forward calculator (pre-tax price plus tax) is a different calculation and isn't the focus of this page.

Why is my result different from just subtracting the tax percentage? expand_more

Because the tax percentage was originally calculated against the smaller pre-tax amount, not the total. Dividing by (1 + tax rate) correctly reverses that, while simple subtraction does not.

Does every insurer or estimator handle tax this way? expand_more

No. Some workflows calculate tax separately from the base price; others don't. This calculator is a general-purpose tool for reversing a tax-inclusive total, not a guarantee of how any specific insurer or estimating system handles tax.
