You may see either name referenced on this site — both refer to the same decoder rules and the same verification process.
Decode My Item uses a curated database of manufacturer serial format rules compiled from publicly available technical documentation, service manuals, and trusted industry references. Each supported brand has a defined decoding method that extracts date information embedded within the serial number by the manufacturer.
This is a rules-based system. When a serial number is entered, we apply the brand-specific format rules and return the encoded date without any estimation or inference. The output reflects what the manufacturer encoded in the serial number itself.

Before a decoding rule is published or changed, it is expected to be supported by more than one of the following:
Rule changes are added to our automated regression test suite so that a future update cannot silently reintroduce a previously corrected error.
The serial number returned a single, unambiguous manufacture year with no decade ambiguity.
The brand's serial format reuses year codes on a repeating cycle (commonly 20–30 years), resulting in two possible valid years. Physical inspection or supporting documentation is needed to confirm the correct decade.
The serial number could not be decoded, or the brand (e.g., Kenmore) sources from multiple OEM manufacturers with different format rules. Additional information is required.
Several manufacturers (GE and Samsung are two current examples) encode the year as a letter or digit on a repeating cycle, so the same code can correctly match more than one real year. When that happens, we show every candidate year the code matches rather than guessing at a single one.
A recognized model number can sometimes narrow a repeating result to a single year, either from a known production range or from a specific model record. When the model is not recognized, or when it only narrows the result to a range rather than a single year, the full set of candidates (or the production range) remains the honest result.
When a serial does not match any supported format for a brand, the result is unsupported rather than an estimated guess. We would rather tell you a result is unavailable than return a number that looks precise but is not backed by a rule.
When no serial number is available, our Smart Lookup section accepts a model number or free-text description. This path uses an AI language model to estimate the product's manufacture era based on publicly known product history. Results from this path carry lower certainty than direct serial decoding and should be treated as estimates only.

If you believe a result is wrong, you can report it using the feedback option on the decoder results panel or the Feedback page. Reported issues are reviewed against the source hierarchy above before a rule is changed.
Corrections are added to our automated regression tests before release, so the fix is verified and protected against regressing later. We do not promise a specific turnaround time for reviewing a report. Older redirects and historical page compatibility may remain in place even after a correction ships, so that existing links and bookmarks keep working.

Decoder logic is covered by an automated regression test suite that runs before changes are published, so existing brand rules cannot be silently broken by an unrelated update. Builds are checked for consistency so the same input produces the same output every time. We also run link and route audits to catch broken internal links, and browser checks across common screen sizes before a change goes live.
