Apple identifiers need an era check before they need a decoder. Older serial formats may expose a coded production week, while newer randomized serials do not provide a dependable date pattern for this tool to read.

Use the serial path only for a supported legacy format. For a modern iPhone, iPad, Mac, Watch, or accessory, the model number and Apple support records are the more honest route to product generation and service context.
Apple is preselected. A 12-character legacy-format serial may return candidate years and a coded week. A 10-character randomized serial will not produce a manufacture date.

Legacy serials versus randomized serials
The current decoder has a limited legacy path for 12-character serials: character 4 is treated as a repeating year code and characters 5-6 as a production-week field. Ten-character serials are treated as randomized and do not return a decoded date. A legacy result is still a candidate range, not proof of one exact manufacturing year.
Why the Apple model identifier matters
The model identifier is the stronger clue for device family and generation. Apple documents how to reveal the model number in Settings and how to find serials on the device, packaging, or account. Smart Lookup can use that model context without pretending a randomized serial carries a public date code.

When not to infer a manufacture date
- Do not decode a modern randomized serial as though it used the older year/week layout.
- Do not treat a model release year as the manufacture date of one physical device.
- Do not choose one decade from a repeating legacy code without model-era evidence.
- Remove a leading S copied from a package barcode because Apple says it is not part of the serial.
- Use Apple support records for warranty or service decisions that require authoritative confirmation.
