HP Serial Number Date Code and Product ID Guide

HP labels carry several identifiers with different jobs. The serial identifies one device, the product number identifies its configuration, and the supported date-code path can return a year cycle and production week without proving one exact decade.

  1. 1 Find the label or open HP System Information or HP Support Assistant.
  2. 2 Enter the serial exactly as printed and review the candidate year cycle and week.
  3. 3 Use the product number and model family to resolve the decade before relying on the estimate.
bolt Decode Serial Number

This page covers HP notebooks, desktops, all-in-ones, monitors, and printers only where the serial matches the current tested rule. Keep the product number beside the serial because it is usually the better route to exact drivers, documentation, and model-family context.

What the supported HP rule reads

For a serial with at least six characters, the current rule reads character 4 as the last digit of a candidate year and characters 5-6 as the production week. Because a single digit repeats every decade, the output can remain ambiguous. An invalid week does not become a made-up month.

category

Serial number versus product number

HP states that the serial identifies the specific device, while the model or product number identifies the product configuration within a series. Use the product number to find the correct drivers and support documents; use the serial for device-specific service and warranty workflows.

HP identifiers and their roles

Supported HP serial date field ~ Estimated decade; tested rule.
Character 4 + characters 5-6

Character 4 supplies a repeating year digit; characters 5-6 supply a production-week number when valid.

Product number / P/N ~ Identification only.
Configuration-specific identifier

Separates variants within a model series and is the best key for drivers and documentation.

Model or product name ~ Context, not manufacture date.
Family name shown in software or on label

Provides generation and category context but does not identify one physical unit.

HP date-code walkthrough

Tested decoder example
CNX7120BXX

The current regression reads 7 as candidate years 2007 or 2017 and 12 as production week 12. The model family must decide which decade is plausible.

Invalid week handling
Week outside 01-53

The decoder preserves the year-cycle clue but labels the week field invalid instead of converting it to a false month.

Product support workflow
Serial + product number

HP recommends keeping both identifiers: the serial is device-specific, while the product number selects the exact configuration and documentation.

Common HP interpretation mistakes

  • check_circle Using the product name from the front bezel as though it identifies the exact configuration.
  • check_circle Choosing a decade from the year digit without checking model generation.
  • check_circle Treating a week field as a calendar month.
  • check_circle Entering a product number in the serial field.
  • check_circle Assuming every HP product line and era follows the same date-code layout.

FAQ

Can an HP serial number show an exact year? expand_more

The supported rule returns a repeating year digit, so model generation is needed when more than one decade is plausible.

What is the difference between an HP serial and product number? expand_more

The serial identifies one device. The product number identifies a configuration within a product series.

Does the supported HP result include a month? expand_more

No. It uses a production-week field, not a month field.

Where can I find HP identifiers without reading the label? expand_more

HP System Information, HP Support Assistant, and the HP app can display identifiers for supported product types.

What if the HP rule does not match? expand_more

Keep the result unresolved and use the product number or Smart Lookup; do not force another brand or product-line rule.

Need to resolve the HP decade?

Add the product number and model family in Smart Lookup when the serial year digit maps to more than one decade.
